Mancini: ‘Jorginho won’t start’ | Football Italia

Roberto Mancini confirms Jorginho will not start tonight’s Nations League game between Italy and Bosnia-Herzegovina, while defending the striker squad rotation.

It kicks off at 19.45 UK time (18.45 GMT) at the Stadio Franchi in Florence and is their first game since November 2019.

Click here for the probable line-ups.

“It’s a very unusual situation, because players returned straight from their vacations, some haven’t been in training at all, so we’ll see if substitutions are needed during the game,” the CT told Rai Sport.

Giorgio Chiellini returns to the squad after his knee ligament injury, but Mancini warned to expect many changes going into Monday’s match against Holland.

“Giorgio is a very important player who has experience, but is also a very important person in the locker room for the other lads. Francesco Acerbi did very well filling in, so we have two games in four days and have to think about the alternatives in every area with many changes in the Netherlands.

“I don’t think Jorginho will start, as he arrived a few days later than the others, we’re still evaluating his fitness levels, so he’ll certainly be on the bench.”

Nicolò Zaniolo also returns after a lengthy injury absence, having torn his anterior cruciate ligament in January.

“I believe the important thing is that he’s growing up as a person as well as a player. As for tactical roles, he can play wide attack at Roma, in a trequartista position or in midfield, so I don’t think he’ll have many problems adapting.”

Andrea Belotti is expected to start upfront this evening, reserving Capocannoniere and

European Golden Shoe winner Ciro Immobile for the Netherlands match.

“It’s important to have them both in good shape, then we must evaluate their fitness levels and the situation. They are not in a condition right now to play two games in four days, and the situation will probably be the same in October-November with three matches in 10 days,” continued Mancini.

“We also have to look after the players and make sure they don’t get injured.”

This game will be the first for Italy since the lockdown, so also their first behind closed doors.

“I hope the fans can be entertained watching from home and that we can put in a strong performance to pick up where we left off 10 months ago.”

Benevento in for Cornelius? | Football Italia

Benevento are looking for a centre-forward on the transfer market and have reportedly identified Parma striker Andreas Cornelius as the perfect fit.

Tuttomercatoweb claims the newly promoted Streghe have targeted Cornelius as they are looking for fire power ahead of their return to Serie A.

The 27-year-old scored 12 times in 26 League games in 2019-20 and

Benevento must brace themselves for a complicated operation.

The Denmark international arrived on a two-year loan with an obligation to buy with conditions from Atalanta last summer.

Cornelius moved to Serie A from FC Copenhagen in July 2017, but La Dea have since loaned him out to Girondins de Bordeaux in Ligue 1 and rivals Parma in Serie A.

The report claims Benevento, who have already approached Parma about Gervinho, are now preparing to open talks for Cornelius and study the possibilities of a transfer this summer.

Arthur charged after car crash | Football Italia

New Juventus signing Arthur Melo has reportedly been charged with driving under the influence after crashing his Ferrari at 4am.

  According to Diari de Girona,

via Football Espana, the midfielder smashed his vehicle into a streetlight on Sunday night/Monday morning, having mounted the footpath and travelled along it for some time.

He then failed a breathalyser test and was charged with drunk driving.

It’s the latest setback for the Brazilian, who has already signed for Juventus in a swap deal with Miralem Pjanic, but is still in a legal battle with Barcelona.

Arthur refused to play for the Blaugrana in the Champions League and Barca want to impose a heavy fine, taking strong disciplinary action.

Highlights: Udinese 2

Juventus were preparing the party for their ninth consecutive Serie A title, but Udinese had other ideas with a comeback to win 2-1 in stoppages.

Matthijs de Ligt thought he’d done enough to secure victory at the Dacia Arena with his ferocious strike from distance, his fourth goal of the season.

However, Leonardo Bonucci and Giorgio Chiellini were sorely missed in the back four, as Udinese tore the Bianconeri apart.

Ilija Nestorovski got on the end of Ken Sema’s cross with a diving header, completely unmarked, then in injury time Seko Fofana went on a marauding run from midfield to skip past two defenders and goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny.

Highlights: Sampdoria 1

Zlatan Ibrahimovic bagged a brace at Marassi, while Hakan Calhanoglu and Rafael Leao rounded out the scoreline, Gianluigi Donnarumma saved a penalty and Sampdoria saw a spectacular debut goal.

Milan dominated the match at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris, taking an early lead through Ibrahimovic, who then set up Calhanoglu for a strike that was originally disallowed for a foul, but given following the VAR review.

The Turkey international returned the favour with an assist for Ibra and substitute Rafael Leao curled in a splendid final strike.

Samp had their chances too, but Donnarumma parried yet another penalty, although even he could do nothing on the debut Serie A long-range stunner from Kristoffer Askildsen.

Details emerge over Osimhen’s Napoli move | Football Italia

Napoli are expected to announce the deal to sign Victor Osimhen from Lille, with Italian sources assuring it’s €50m plus bonuses and Orestis Karnezis.

You can read Vilizar Yakimov’s blog on what Osimhen can bring to the Stadio San Paolo.

The €81m figure given by the media in France probably includes the salary from his five-year contract as well, but does not represent the kind of sum Napoli would pay for a 21-year-old forward.

Multiple Italian sources, including Sportitalia transfer expert Alfredo Pedullà and Sky Sport Italia’s Gianluca Di Marzio, all point to the same fee.

It is €50m plus bonuses and goalkeeper Karnezis making the move to Lille in exchange for Osimhen.

The Nigeria international already had his medical in Rome over a week ago, then signed the contracts, but the announcement was delayed until the final details with his agent could be whittled down.

This is reportedly due to commissions and the payment schedule rather than any issues with the player or club.

An announcement is expected either today or tomorrow.

Conte finding his Inter team | Football Italia_2

Whilst the 4-0 destruction of SPAL was impressive, it was also needed. There is still a feeling that Inter are always one game away from a crisis at present and if they had managed to lose in Ferrara, then it is likely that this would have been the case. Consistency is the buzzword for the Nerazzurri these days and now they are showing signs of this, Antonio Conte wants to make sure people know about it.

In truth, SPAL did not even muster a shot on target and Inter ran out clear winners. Since the break, the Milanese giants have had a Jekyll and Hyde persona in certain games, but coming off a good win against Torino, the ‘mister’ was quick to point out that this result ‘sent a signal’. One thing is for certain, the coach knows how he wants his team to play and when they do so, it can be devastating. The problem has been, however, that when they have dropped off the pace, they’ve been so far from the way Conte wants them to play that it has been quite baffling.

There is no doubt Antonio is a stubborn man, but this has led many to criticise his tactics and insist that he bangs his head against a wall trying desperately to enforce his standard 3-5-2 formation. This was something he is desperate to dispel and last night he felt he had. He was keen to point out that the first goal was very much down to himself, as Inter did outwit SPAL when they rushed forward with four attackers and bamboozled their backline. Conte pointed out this was a direct instruction and something that he had employed whilst at Bari and Siena, when his tactics were 4-2-4. He also spoke of the improvement of Christian Eriksen and that he has now been employed between the lines as a type of trequartista behind the front two. This makes the formation a fluid 3-4-1-2 and said that this transition certainly involves more of the team in the attacking areas.

On the face of it, as Inter sit six points off Juventus and look far more consistent than The Old Lady and Lazio, one could almost argue that a title challenge is still in the offing, but one has to think this is unlikely. Conte made it clear last night that second place was the aim and when you look at the upcoming fixtures, you can see why. Roma, Fiorentina, Genoa, Napoli and finally the in form Atalanta stand in their way, and despite recent performances, the Nerazzurri need to prove that they can go for long spells at this tempo.

Whilst all that may sound negative, there are many positives for Inter. After the game against Torino, the coach was clear that he was brought to Inter to embark on a three-year project, and when you look at it like that, Inter have come a long way. They are financially secure and have deep pockets to help Beppe Marotta and Conte achieve this. They are purging the club of its bad apples and Mauro Icardi is gone, soon to be followed by Ivan Perisic, Dalbert, Joao Mario and others. He has formulated possibly the best partnership in European Football with Romelu Lukaku and Lautaro Martinez looking unstoppable and they look like they may even keep hold of their Argentinian. Alexis Sanchez is reborn and looking like he may stay, whilst some of the squad players have been trusted and are repaying the faith.

With Inter, the issue is always, what constitutes a success? This season a second-place finish would be an improvement, and these wins against Torino and SPAL do suggest that there is a change and that they are becoming more consistent. A victory against Roma and this would really start to make Serie A sit up and look, but many also know that the Nerazzurri have a way of shooting themselves in the foot.

For now however, as the likes of Sanchez and Eriksen get better week on week and the rotation continues to pay dividends, things look positive. Conte’s vision is taking shape and perhaps the most positive element is that Inter have shown on numerous occasions that when they listen and do what he wants, it works. Practice as they say, makes perfect.
