Inter are seeking a low-cost understudy to Romelu Lukaku, with Fernando Llorente of Napoli now more likely than Chelsea’s Olivier Giroud.
There is still no centre-forward who covers the same characteristics as their Belgium international hitman.
Antonio Conte has made no secret of his desire to work with Giroud, who only recently signed a new contract at Stamford Bridge after he was on the verge of a January move to San Siro.
According to Tuttosport, the latest candidate for Inter is Llorente,
who is available for practically nothing from Napoli.
The veteran Spaniard already worked with Conte at Juventus and is so far on the outskirts of the Partenopei squad that he hasn’t even been given a shirt number.
Benevento and Genoa are interested, but his Champions League experience could be valuable for Inter.
Hans Hateboer confirms he is looking for a move away from Atalanta this summer, but can’t help thinking ‘how beautiful it would’ve been’ to beat PSG in the Champions League.
La Dea were 1-0 up until the 90th minute in the quarter-final, only to concede twice in stoppages and lose 2-1.
“In the dressing room, just after the game, that’s when the pain
was at its worst,” he told Voetbal International.
“Everyone realised just how close we had come. I tried not to think about it in the days that followed, but it’s tough when everyone you meet brings it up.
“It crosses my mind, how beautiful it would’ve been, but I think we can be proud of the season we’ve had regardless. The reception we received in Bergamo was fantastic, as the bond between the fans and the people is so strong, I saw it from the first day in Italy. It’s clear not just after victories, but also defeats.
“With the coronavirus crisis, our Champions League success was an ideal distraction for people, to make them happy.”
Nonetheless, Hateboer confirmed he is looking for a new adventure after two-and-a-half years in Bergamo.
“I think it’d be very interesting for me to experience a different competition. I believe I’ve probably achieved all I can with Atalanta.”
Inter forward Romelu Lukaku surpassed Alan Shearer’s consecutive scoring streak in the Europa League and can become the highest scoring Belgian in the competition against Shakhtar Donetsk.
Lukaku has found the net in his last nine appearances in the Europa League and has scored 12 goals in the process, taking his total tally to 17 in the competition.
Against Leverkusen, Lukaku matched his compatriot Erwin Vandenbergh, who scored 17 goals across spells at Lierse, Anderlecth and KAA Gent.
The 27-year-old has scored four times for Inter in his four Europa League games so far, following eight in nine Everton matches in 2014-15.
Before moving to Chelsea in August 2011, the Belgium international had already scored five goals for Anderlecht in the competition and by the end of the competition this month, he could be alone at the top and the highest scoring Belgian in the Europa League.
On Monday, Inter face Shakhtar in the semi-finals, and Lukaku is again expected to start the semi-final against the Ukrainians.
