Crotone promoted to Serie A! | Football Italia

Crotone have been promoted into Serie A after their 5-1 hammering of Livorno, joining Benevento in the top flight next term.

This will be only their third ever campaign in Serie A, after finishing 17th in 2016-17 with an extraordinary comeback under coach Davide Nicola, then 18th position in 2017-18.

The team from Calabria secured second place in Serie B with 19 wins, eight draws and nine defeats.

Pippo Inzaghi’s Benevento had booked their spot several weeks ago and are currently 28 points clear of Crotone.

The Pitagorici had to wait until this evening to celebrate after their 5-1 win away to Livorno, as Spezia’s failure to get all three points at Cremonese proved decisive.

The third and final promotion spot will be awarded via play-offs.

Ancelotti: ‘Everton for the long haul’ | Football Italia

Carlo Ancelotti confirms ‘I’d like to have a very long experience’ at Everton, where he is planning ‘an evolution, not a revolution’.

Ancelotti has not lasted more than two years in any of his six jobs since his tenure at Milan ended in 2009, but he is hoping to buck that trend at Everton.

“I feel part of this project, which started for me in December, and I hope it lasts for a long time,” the 61-year-old told Sky Sport Italia.

“I’ve never had very long experiences in my career, but I’d like to have one here: Liverpool took five years to get to the top.

“Everton want to build a new stadium and have the ambition of fighting for a place in Europe.

“I’d like to be part of this project for a long time. Being appreciated gives me a lot of pleasure and motivation, but at the same time it also gives you a lot of responsibility.

“You’re appreciated for what you’ve done, but you’d also like to be appreciated for what you’re going to do.

“That’s my objective. Doing it for those who appreciate you is much more stimulating.”

The former Napoli boss is coming to the end of his first half-season in charge of the Toffees, lifting them to safety amidst the coronavirus pandemic.

“The balance sheet is a positive one, considering it’s been a very strange season.

“I came here during the Christmas period with the team in trouble and then there was the pandemic.

“One of the most positive aspects is the great welcome that the fans reserved for me, plus I have to say that I found a very organised club, with beautiful structures and a fabulous training ground.”

Finally, Carletto was asked about Everton’s plans in the upcoming transfer window.

“The club’s ambition is to improve and we’ll focus on the transfer window once the season finishes.

“It’ll last until 5 October, so there will be plenty of time to improve the team. I’m not thinking of a revolution but maybe an evolution.”

Report: Zlatan and Donnarumma meet Raiola | Football Italia

Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Gianluigi Donnarumma took a private helicopter to meet agent Mino Raiola in Monte Carlo, it’s reported, where they’ll discuss Milan contract renewals.

According to and Pianeta Milan, the pair were whisked away from the Milanello training ground this afternoon, having played in last night’s 1-1 draw with Atalanta.

It’s believed they were going to meet Raiola, who represents both the star players.

Ibrahimovic’s contract only runs to the end of this season and he had seemed certain to leave until the decision to stick with coach Stefano Pioli.

Now he is reconsidering his options and maintain the offer on the table is a salary worth €4m per season, whereas Ibra wants €6m.

Pianeta Milan are confident Ibrahimovic will commit his future to the Diavolo.

As for Donnarumma, his contract is due to expire in June 2021 and it remains to be seen if he’d ask for a release clause, particularly if Milan fail to qualify for the Champions League.

The 21-year-old already has 201 appearances under his belt for Milan and last night saved a Ruslan Malinovskyi penalty, marking his first start as captain.

Pioli edges Gattuso in coaching battle | Football Italia_3

Napoli and Milan played out an entertaining 2-2 draw at the Stadio San Paolo in a match where the tactical aspects of both teams were on display.

The Partenopei, playing at home and high on confidence after a recent upturn in results, were not about to just let an in-form Rossoneri come into their home and dictate the play, no matter how much their manager Rino Gattuso had connections with the Lombard team. They pressed, harried and created chances that had Gigio Donnarumma being forced into save after save.

Significantly, the attacks were coming down the right side of Milan’s defence as Andrea Conti was having another shocker at right-back, and it’s no wonder the club are linked with a number of full-backs. Somewhere Donnarumma’s agent Mino Raiola must have been smiling seeing his client’s value increase by the minute with showdown talks with the hierarchy at the club scheduled soon. Milan really can’t afford to let this generational talent go.

While the youth product kept the scores level, il Diavolo took the lead completely against the run of play. Ante Rebic was once again involved and his growing influence in the team was evident yet again. It was not just that he made a forward run into space, but, like a man brimming with confidence and knowing exactly where on the pitch he could hurt the opposition, he pointed to where he required the ball to be played. Ismael Bennacer promptly obliged and the Croatian’s turn and cross was finished off by Theo Hernandez.

Quick forward passing, skilful play and vision inside the penalty area and the chance being taken, it has become a staple of this Milan under Pioli since the re-start.

The away side noticeably dropped at least 10 yards deeper after taking the lead, which would be to their detriment. They conceded the equaliser from a free-kick as their longstanding inability to deal with defending from set-plays came back at them.

Lorenzo Insigne, who has found a new lease of life recently and came out and said recently that the munity the players created last November was a ‘mistake,’ whipped in the cross of a man in form. None of Milan’s players managed to clear and it was a tap in for right-back Giovanni Di Lorenzo.

A goal for each side, both scored by full-backs. It highlights how modern players are expected to be all-rounders, with the ability to contribute on both ends of the pitch. The days of the one dimensional footballer are long-gone.

Stefano Pioli clearly drove home to his team to not be overawed by playing an in-form Napoli. He obviously encouraged his team to express themselves more as they came out after the interval and had the home side on the back foot. But yet again, a goal came against the run of play.

Theo was tucked in just a bit too much, which allowed Jose Callejon the freedom on the right to pick out the intelligent run of Dries Mertens and Napoli’s all-time top goal scorer made it 125. Having recently extended his contract till 2022, the Belgian will have put great distance ahead of the rest by time his career in Napoli is at its end.

One of the most significant ways Pioli has improved his team is in his in-game management and he showed his hand after Milan went behind. He immediately brought on Rafael Leao and Giacomo Bonaventura for the under-par Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Hakan Calhanoglu.

It paid dividends as Bonaventura was fouled by Nikola Maksimovic soon after inside the box to give his team a spot kick. Napoli protested, VAR checked and Frank Kessie scored. For the second match in a row, the Ivorian made the game 2-2 and he is showing the form he displayed at Atalanta on a more consistent basis at Milan.

There was still 20 minutes to go in the encounter, but it was clear that Milan were happy to sit back and settle for a point while Napoli pushed for a late winner. The entire Rossoneri back four was in their own penalty area, the double pivot of Kessie and Bennacer were on the edge and even Leao was forced to make a tackle or two.

It is very rare that a Napoli manager had taken off both Insigne and Mertens in the same game, let alone at the same time, but that was exactly what Gattuso did. It was a move most likely brought by necessity rather than change in tactics, with the players having such an intense workload playing every three to four days. They aren’t machines, after all.

Their replacements, Arkadiusz Milik and Hirving Lozano, couldn’t affect the game much. Given the constant talk about his future, one must wonder if Milik’s head is still with the club, despite scoring the winner in Napoli’s Coppa Italia final victory over Juventus.

Milan’s backs-to-the-wall approach was made more difficult when Alexis Saelemaekers showed his inexperience by making two unnecessary fouls in quick succession and got himself sent off. But each Napoli attack was defended stoutly by Milan, and while they did get some possession, the pace of Leao could only take them so far. The fixture petered out, Milan happy enough with a point, Napoli probably feeling they deserved more.

Speaking post-match, Pioli mentioned ‘raising the bar’ while Gattuso bemoaned his side wasting scoring chances. Milan have stepped up, staying unbeaten against Roma, Lazio, Juve and Napoli but the Partenopei need to heed Gattuso’s words. They face Barcelona in less than a month, and have to take whatever chances they get.

Mihajlovic: ‘Fiorentina fans always jeered me’ | Football Italia

Sinisa Mihajlovic admits his rapport with Fiorentina fans was poor, as he visits with Bologna tomorrow. ‘They jeered me even when we won games.’

It kicks off on Wednesday at 20.45 UK time (19.45 GMT), click here for a match preview.

“We’ll certainly make some changes compared to the Lecce game, but I haven’t decided yet,” said the coach in his press conference after a 3-2 thriller.

“I thank the players and staff, because for the second year running we’ve achieved our objective. The next step will be moving from comfortable safety to fighting for a place in Europe. We have to change our mental attitude, be more calm and not unravel so quickly on an emotional level. I am convinced that next year will be better.

“There are six points up for grabs and we’ll try to get them all. I don’t play to draw. I only ever play to win. I might not get there, but I won’t ever settle beforehand. What counts for me is the attitude shown in training and during the game. I want courage.”

The coach has been harsh on Riccardo Orsolini and is trying to get him to step up to the next level.

“I think Federico Chiesa is at a more advantaged stage compared to Riccardo at the moment, but so much depends on him. I would like to see both of them playing for Italy in the Euros next summer.”

Mihajlovic is up against one of his former clubs and reveals his rapport with the Fiorentina fans was anything but idyllic.

“They jeered me even when we won games. I don’t have good memories in that sense. I was much happier at Torino and given a warm welcome. I was sad to be sacked there, but that’s football.”

Di Francesco favourite for Fiorentina | Football Italia

Eusebio Di Francesco is reportedly in talks to take over as the coach of Fiorentina next season, having turned down Alaves.

According to Sportitalia, the former Sassuolo, Roma and Sampdoria boss has chosen the Viola as his favoured next destination.

The feeling is believed to be mutual, with Di Francesco emerging as the front-runner, especially as ex-Roma midfielder Daniele De Rossi does not have the necessary credentials to take a Serie A coaching role.

Spanish side Alaves had approached Di Francesco with a two-year contract, but he was not convinced.

Vincenzo Montella started the season with Fiorentina, but was fired and replaced by Beppe Iachini.

Highlights: Juventus 2

Juventus clinched their ninth Serie A title in a row with this 2-0 win over Sampdoria, despite Cristiano Ronaldo missing a penalty and some injury worries.

Cristiano Ronaldo broke the deadlock in stoppages by finishing off a Miralem Pjanic free kick routine.

Samp had several chances after the restart, but Federico Bernardeschi got the rebound from an Emil Audero save.

Morten Thorsby saw red for two bookable offences and Ronaldo had the chance to close the gap on Capocannoniere Ciro Immobile, but blasted his penalty on to the crossbar.

Nonetheless, CR7 dived into the Scudetto celebrations at the final whistle.
