Joao Mario leaves Lokomotiv Moscow | Football Italia

Inter loanee Joao Mario seems set to return and thanked Lokomotiv Moscow ‘for making me feel at home during this season’.

The Portuguese midfielder used his Instagram profile to bid his farewell to the Russian side, who seem to have failed to trigger the option to buy the player.

“I would like to thank everyone at Lokomotiv Moscow, from the President to the coaching staff, my colleagues and the fans, for making me feel at home during this season,” he wrote.

“It has been a pleasure to war your shirt and to fight for your colours. I’m leaving with a very positive feeling about the moments we shared together. All the best!”

Joao Mario has played 18 games in the Russian Premier League this term, contributing one goal and five assists.

His contract with Inter expires in June 2022.

Inter make Alexis hungry again | Football Italia_2

The last few years haven’t been the best of Alexis Sanchez’s career. It has given many the impression that he’s past his prime and is far from being the player that he used to be at Arsenal or Barcelona. The move to Manchester United has gone on to become one of the most underwhelming signings in the club’s history. There seemed to be a lack of motivation, and with the money involved, it seemed like a move dictated by greed.

But in recent weeks, many things are pointing to the fact that the Sanchez probably hasn’t played this well since his Arsenal days under Arsene Wenger. Inter’s 3-1 win over Torino on Monday has a confirmation of that, as the Chilean notched up a couple of assists and looked in sparkling form – once again.

For probably the first time in around two years, there seems to be a zip about Sanchez. He looks rejuvenated and gives the impression of being a player who is actually bothered about winning games for his team. He is moving quickly across the Inter front-two and his movement in the final-third is causing big problems for the opposition on a consistent basis.

Apart from grabbing assists against Toro, the former Barca man sparkled against Brescia as well. He assisted twice again and scored once too. He got a vital assist against Sassuolo and even though he couldn’t score against Verona, the Chilean did impress with his desire to keep plugging away and nearly succeeded too.

He looks hungry for goals and hungry to contribute to goals as much as he can. The media has often been critical of his attitude in recent years. Reports have even suggested that he comes across as the selfish character who will be happy if he scores, even if his team loses. Whether that is true or not is anyone’s guess, but that doesn’t really ring true at Inter – at least from the outside.

In recent weeks and months, Antonio Conte has been crying out for some depth and variety in attacking areas. He had tried to sign a target man like Olivier Giroud or Edin Dzeko in the summer and that didn’t work out. Sanchez was going through an injury patch and Conte decided to move Matteo Politano on, despite everything.

The Torino game saw Conte rest Romelu Lukaku, who had picked up a slight knock. For how important Lukaku has been to the Nerazzurri this season, not risking him at this point of the season was a big decision to make. But the fact that Conte trusted Sanchez to do a job beside Lautaro Martinez said a lot about how he’s earned the manager’s trust with recent performances. And he didn’t let anyone down.

He isn’t quite the tall and wiry forward that Conte ideally wanted in Giroud or Llorente and he isn’t the sort that Lukaku is either. But Sanchez brings that street-smart attitude that Conte really likes in his forward. That is exactly why he had a liking for Carlos Tevez at Juventus and for Diego Costa at Chelsea. And perhaps, that is why he likes Lautaro Martinez as well. Sanchez has this aura about him which can instil a work-ethic into a team, as it did for Arsenal back in the days. Sanchez’s workhorse nature allowed Giroud and Mesut Ozil to thrive in the freedom they got.

This might only be a spell for Sanchez. But like Christian Eriksen, even he took a while to get to grips with Conte’s approach to the game. The injury on international duty didn’t help. More than that, he had one of Europe’s best striker pairing starting ahead of him and he had acquired a reputation for not being the best of characters either.

But somehow, the 31-year-old has fought through it all to become a very reliable goalscoring option for Inter at such a critical point of the campaign. They just have this assurance now that if any of Martinez or Lukaku don’t play, they have someone to fall back on. They didn’t have that with Politano or in the first-half of the campaign.

With talks reportedly ongoing about Inter signing him on another loan, Man Utd should ideally be looking at Sanchez’s form with some attention. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men use quick attacking transitions and they too need depth to compete on all fronts, despite being unbeaten in 18 straight games. Sanchez’s future might be uncertain but it still rings true that on his day, he can still be a match-winner.

Highlights: Atalanta 1_2

A bandaged Luis Muriel was Atalanta’s hero as he came off the bench to score the winner against Bologna.

Muriel risked a freak head injury just a week ago but put all that behind him in a hard-fought victory for Atalanta, who broke their Serie A points record for the third time under Gian Piero Gasperini.

Surviving a free kick from old boy Musa Barrow that hit the bar, the Dea are now just six points off league leaders Juventus, despite having played a game more.

Juric the Gasperini protege | Football Italia_4

Towards the end of last season, Hellas Verona were in a bad place. They had finally sacked Fabio Grosso, who despite having one of the strongest squads in Serie B, was struggling to mount any kind of genuine promotion challenge. In came Alfredo Aglietti, who performed a miracle to lead a lacklustre Gialloblu to promotion through the play-offs – only to be later dismissed.

A little over a year later, Hellas, who were expected to go straight back down, have defied all expectations to sit firmly in mid-table, well away from the bottom three. The mastermind behind all of this is Aglietti’s replacement Ivan Juric, a protege of one of the most respected coaches in Europe, Gian Piero Gasperini. Though his road to Verona was an eventful one.

Juric first met Gasperini during his playing career, when the latter was appointed as Crotone manager in 2003. Under Gasperini, the Calabrese would win promotion to Serie B and achieve their joint-highest ever league finish. When the Piedmont tactician was given the Genoa job in 2006, Juric followed, becoming a key part of the team that secured a return to the top-flight after an absence of eleven years.

The Croatian would represent I Grifone for three more seasons before hanging up his boots in 2010. Shortly after, he set about starting his coaching career, studying for his badges and becoming assistant manager of Genoa’s Primavera team. Just a year later, Gasperini appointed him as his assistant at his new club, Internazionale.

This was a clear indication of the excellent rapport between the two men and Gasperini’s recognition of Juric’s footballing intelligence and coaching potential. Gasperini didn’t last long at Inter and Juric followed him to his next club, Palermo, where they had two separate spells thanks to the trigger-happy nature of the owner at the time, Maurizio Zamparini.

In 2013, Juric decided he was ready to forge his own managerial career. He returned to Genoa to manage their Primavera team for a season before moving to third-tier side Mantova. The Croatian had teething problems at the start of his spell at the Danilo Martelli, however, winning just one of his first 10 games, but would eventually lead them to a comfortable mid-table finish.

Despite this inauspicious start to his coaching career, Serie B outfit Crotone would appoint him as their manager at the start of the 2015-16 season. The year before, I Pitagorici had finished just one point above the relegation places. With Juric at the helm – alongside a number of key additions including Alex Cordaz, Federico Ricci and Ante Budimir – Crotone would unexpectedly challenge for promotion to Serie A.

They occupied one of the two automatic promotion spots for most of the season and ultimately won promotion to Serie A for the first time in their history. Naturally, Juric’s historic achievement would catch the attention of a bigger club and he wouldn’t remain at Crotone for their maiden season in the top-flight.

In the summer of 2016, Gasperini, who had been back at Genoa for three seasons by that point, left the Luigi Ferraris to take charge of Atalanta. The stars were aligned. Juric was a promising, young coach who already knew the club well and possessed similar ideas to his mentor. Thus, he became Gasperini’s replacement at Genoa.

To say his time at Genoa was chaotic would be an understatement. His first spell lasted less than a year; sacked in February 2017 after a humiliating 5-0 defeat to bottom-placed Pescara. Just two months later, he was back, but was sacked again 12 games into the 2017-18 season, with the Grifone sitting in the relegation zone.

So it was a massive shock when, early into the 2018-19 season, Juric returned for a third spell following the dismissal of Davide Ballardini. He lasted just seven games, with no wins, before being sacked again.

By this point, his managerial reputation was in tatters. He had gone from one of the most exciting coaches in Italy to a punchline. So his appointment at Hellas Verona in June 2019 was met with understandable scepticism. But in less than a year, he’s managed to restore his reputation and then some.

Juric had Hellas competing for a Europa League spot for most of the season, despite minimal spending in the transfer market. They’ve fallen away from contention for Europe since the restart, but they still seem likely to finish in the top-half, a stellar achievement for a team that everyone doubted last August.

The Croatian has earned praise from his mentor, Gasperini, for his accomplishments. “I think they’re the revelation of the season, also because of the playing style they have developed.”

Gasperini’s praise of his protege’s tactical approach is amusing, since the two employ a very similar style of play. Both tend to set out their teams in a 3-4-2-1 or 3-4-1-2 formation, with a positive and aggressive approach to the game. Clearly, Juric has learned a lot from the nine years spent with the 62-year-old tactician.

There’s still a long way to go until he can match Gasperini’s achievements, but he is taking it slower now. He has recently signed a new deal with Verona, indicating that he feels there is still much work to do before he can move on to bigger things.

Banega sparks COVID controversy | Football Italia

Just days before Sevilla face Roma in the Europa League, Ever Banega caused controversy by partying without a mask in a COVID-19 hotspot.

The midfielder was caught on camera by Onda Cero dancing at a nightclub in Valencia.

This particular club has been linked with 12 cases of Coronavirus, so Banega’s presence when he is meant to be following safety protocols sparked controversy in Spain.

Roma are due to play Sevilla in a one-off match on neutral turf in Germany on August 6.

Although Banega has already agreed a transfer to Al-Shabaab for next season, he is still available for the Europa League.

With COVID cases spiking in Spain, it’s increasingly anxious preparing for the European games.

Inter are due to play Getafe in the Europa League, while Napoli will visit Barcelona, one of the areas where the virus is surging at the moment.

Details emerge over Osimhen’s Napoli move | Football Italia

Napoli are expected to announce the deal to sign Victor Osimhen from Lille, with Italian sources assuring it’s €50m plus bonuses and Orestis Karnezis.

You can read Vilizar Yakimov’s blog on what Osimhen can bring to the Stadio San Paolo.

The €81m figure given by the media in France probably includes the salary from his five-year contract as well, but does not represent the kind of sum Napoli would pay for a 21-year-old forward.

Multiple Italian sources, including Sportitalia transfer expert Alfredo Pedullà and Sky Sport Italia’s Gianluca Di Marzio, all point to the same fee.

It is €50m plus bonuses and goalkeeper Karnezis making the move to Lille in exchange for Osimhen.

The Nigeria international already had his medical in Rome over a week ago, then signed the contracts, but the announcement was delayed until the final details with his agent could be whittled down.

This is reportedly due to commissions and the payment schedule rather than any issues with the player or club.

An announcement is expected either today or tomorrow.

Sarri: ‘Dybala recovering well’ | Football Italia

Maurizio Sarri has not yet decided whether to completely rotate his Juventus squad against Roma, but hopes to have Paulo Dybala and Aaron Ramsey back against Lyon.

It kicks off on Saturday at 19.45 UK time (18.45 GMT), click here for a match preview.

The coach had suggested using the Under-23 team in this final game of the Serie A season, having already won the Scudetto and lost 2-0 at Cagliari midweek.

“We’ll evaluate today and tomorrow morning. Those who need to rest will be allowed to do so, those who can play will go on to the pitch,” said Sarri in his press conference.

“I wasn’t complaining about the fixture list, I just pointed out a fact, that we played five times in 12 days. I am fully aware of the difficulties in drawing up the calendar in these circumstances, but I was not trying to change anything, I just said we had to adapt to the situation.”

While Juve have been playing non-stop in Serie A, Olympique Lyonnais played their last competitive game on March 8, and they face off in the Champions League Round of 16 on August 7.

“We don’t know what effect there will be. Clearly, we are dealing with extraordinary circumstances and everyone has their own way of adapting. Right now, the mentality of my team is of a side that has already won the Scudetto, so there’s no need to run any risks.

“We’ll see how Cristiano Ronaldo is doing, but he is among those who played the most, so we have to discuss it with the medical staff and see how he’s feeling.

“Ramsey should be back in group training today, we’ll see tomorrow, but there’s a very good chance he’ll be ready in the Champions League. Dybala is with the medical staff. They told me he the recovery process is going well, but I don’t know when he’ll return.”

That doesn’t mean he expects tomorrow’s game with Roma to be a dull affair, quite the opposite.

“I hope to see two teams free of pressure who can just play football. We’ve recently improved a lot in our approach, pressing higher up the field, keeping more possession, but still respecting the characteristics of the players. Considering it’s the first season, I am satisfied, though obviously there’s huge margin for improvement.”

Juventus have already purchased Arthur Melo for next season, but it seems as if the midfielder is refusing to play in the Champions League for Barcelona.

“I don’t know the situation, so any comment I made would be a wild guess. I prefer to say nothing.”

Sarri was asked what most irritated him this season and had a typical response.

“I am permanently annoyed, so I can’t really name one thing…”

Osimhen can light up Napoli | Football Italia_3

It might sound strange, but 2020 just keeps getting better and better for Napoli from a footballing point of view.

The Partenopei were a complete mess back in December when the infamous row between the players and the club resulted in Carlo Ancelotti’s sacking. However, Gennaro Gattuso has been doing wonders ever since, winning the Coppa Italia and building a solid foundation for next season.

Putting the results aside, Napoli have done extremely well in the January transfer window, bringing in Diego Demme, Stanislav Lobotka and Matteo Politano, while also securing the services of Amir Rrahmani from Verona and SPAL’s top goalscorer Andrea Petagna for next term.

While Aurelio De Laurentiis has done well to add quality and depth to the squad, it’s hard to say that any of those signings bring the excitement that the Napoletani are used to seeing. That’s where Victor Osimhen comes in.

The 21-year-old striker is set to become Napoli’s most expensive signing ever, as the Partenopei are set to pay a stunning €50m plus Orestis Karnezis and bonuses to Lille OSC for the Nigerian talent. The reports of €81m seem far-fetched and probably included the wages for his entire contract. It’s still a lot more than the Partenopei paid for their current most expensive acquisition Hirving Lozano, who arrived for €42m from PSV Eindhoven last summer.

It’s obvious that even for €50m the expectations towards Osimhen will go way beyond the pure excitement that such a signing brings, but what exactly can he bring to Napoli?

The Nigerian’s numbers clearly can’t justify his gigantic rumoured €81m transfer fee, as Osimhen scored 18 goals and four assists in all competitions for Lille, before Ligue 1 was cancelled due to the COVID situation. However, his age and playing style are what make him perfect for Napoli, as the 185cm tall striker possess impressive speed and physique, while his off the ball movement is simply remarkable.

Osimhen is a player who likes to run in the channels and behind the back of opposition defences, which makes him a good for Napoli’s playing style. His acceleration and ability to run with the ball also mean he would be perfect for Gattuso’s counter-attacking approach in certain games.

While neither Arkadiusz Milik nor Dries Mertens combine those qualities, Osimhen’s biggest advantage over them is the intensity of his pressing gamе. The Nigerian averages 1.3 recoveries in the final third, which is significantly higher than Milik’s 0.9, while his speed and agility are far superior to those of Mertens, who at 33, often loses some of his intensity in the latter stages of games.

Osimhen’s presence in Napoli’s attack would allow the Partenopei to recover possession much easier and in more advanced areas of the pitch, while his speed and positioning in the penalty area will make the transition from defence to attack much smoother. This is further highlighted by Osimhen’s 78.9% progressive passes success rate, which is equal to Mertens, but significantly higher than Milik’s 64%.

In terms of shooting, Osimhen is also far more composed than his age might suggest, as 44% of his shots hit the target, which is much better than Mertens’ 35%. Milik’s stats look similar in that regard, but considering that the Pole seems eager to leave, it would certainly help if Napoli have a player of similar height and shooting accuracy.

The Nigerian’s technical ability is not to be underestimated as well, as although he is right-footed, he is also very capable with his left, scoring seven goals with his supposed weaker foot.

Of course, pointing out only the strong aspects of Osimhen’s game would be wrong, so just like Martin Schmidt who used to coach him at Wolfsburg admitted recently, the youngster still has a long way to go tactically. However, he already has remarkable speed and athleticism, so he already is a very strong player.

Mentality wise, just like every young player, the 21-year-old needs to improve his concentration, but he plays with such fire and passion that could potentially make him instrumental for Gattuso’s vision of the team.

Despite all this, the fact remains that Osimhen’s transfer is a huge gamble for Napoli. Becoming Napoli’s most expensive signing ever and one of the most expensive African players of all time surely comes with a burden, so the big risk here is to avoid the exaggerated transfer fee putting in unrealistic expectations towards the player.

It is no coincidence that the likes of Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea have shown interest in the Nigerian, so there is little doubt that Osihmen can light up Naples. He just needs to be given the chance.

Pioli edges Gattuso in coaching battle | Football Italia_3

Napoli and Milan played out an entertaining 2-2 draw at the Stadio San Paolo in a match where the tactical aspects of both teams were on display.

The Partenopei, playing at home and high on confidence after a recent upturn in results, were not about to just let an in-form Rossoneri come into their home and dictate the play, no matter how much their manager Rino Gattuso had connections with the Lombard team. They pressed, harried and created chances that had Gigio Donnarumma being forced into save after save.

Significantly, the attacks were coming down the right side of Milan’s defence as Andrea Conti was having another shocker at right-back, and it’s no wonder the club are linked with a number of full-backs. Somewhere Donnarumma’s agent Mino Raiola must have been smiling seeing his client’s value increase by the minute with showdown talks with the hierarchy at the club scheduled soon. Milan really can’t afford to let this generational talent go.

While the youth product kept the scores level, il Diavolo took the lead completely against the run of play. Ante Rebic was once again involved and his growing influence in the team was evident yet again. It was not just that he made a forward run into space, but, like a man brimming with confidence and knowing exactly where on the pitch he could hurt the opposition, he pointed to where he required the ball to be played. Ismael Bennacer promptly obliged and the Croatian’s turn and cross was finished off by Theo Hernandez.

Quick forward passing, skilful play and vision inside the penalty area and the chance being taken, it has become a staple of this Milan under Pioli since the re-start.

The away side noticeably dropped at least 10 yards deeper after taking the lead, which would be to their detriment. They conceded the equaliser from a free-kick as their longstanding inability to deal with defending from set-plays came back at them.

Lorenzo Insigne, who has found a new lease of life recently and came out and said recently that the munity the players created last November was a ‘mistake,’ whipped in the cross of a man in form. None of Milan’s players managed to clear and it was a tap in for right-back Giovanni Di Lorenzo.

A goal for each side, both scored by full-backs. It highlights how modern players are expected to be all-rounders, with the ability to contribute on both ends of the pitch. The days of the one dimensional footballer are long-gone.

Stefano Pioli clearly drove home to his team to not be overawed by playing an in-form Napoli. He obviously encouraged his team to express themselves more as they came out after the interval and had the home side on the back foot. But yet again, a goal came against the run of play.

Theo was tucked in just a bit too much, which allowed Jose Callejon the freedom on the right to pick out the intelligent run of Dries Mertens and Napoli’s all-time top goal scorer made it 125. Having recently extended his contract till 2022, the Belgian will have put great distance ahead of the rest by time his career in Napoli is at its end.

One of the most significant ways Pioli has improved his team is in his in-game management and he showed his hand after Milan went behind. He immediately brought on Rafael Leao and Giacomo Bonaventura for the under-par Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Hakan Calhanoglu.

It paid dividends as Bonaventura was fouled by Nikola Maksimovic soon after inside the box to give his team a spot kick. Napoli protested, VAR checked and Frank Kessie scored. For the second match in a row, the Ivorian made the game 2-2 and he is showing the form he displayed at Atalanta on a more consistent basis at Milan.

There was still 20 minutes to go in the encounter, but it was clear that Milan were happy to sit back and settle for a point while Napoli pushed for a late winner. The entire Rossoneri back four was in their own penalty area, the double pivot of Kessie and Bennacer were on the edge and even Leao was forced to make a tackle or two.

It is very rare that a Napoli manager had taken off both Insigne and Mertens in the same game, let alone at the same time, but that was exactly what Gattuso did. It was a move most likely brought by necessity rather than change in tactics, with the players having such an intense workload playing every three to four days. They aren’t machines, after all.

Their replacements, Arkadiusz Milik and Hirving Lozano, couldn’t affect the game much. Given the constant talk about his future, one must wonder if Milik’s head is still with the club, despite scoring the winner in Napoli’s Coppa Italia final victory over Juventus.

Milan’s backs-to-the-wall approach was made more difficult when Alexis Saelemaekers showed his inexperience by making two unnecessary fouls in quick succession and got himself sent off. But each Napoli attack was defended stoutly by Milan, and while they did get some possession, the pace of Leao could only take them so far. The fixture petered out, Milan happy enough with a point, Napoli probably feeling they deserved more.

Speaking post-match, Pioli mentioned ‘raising the bar’ while Gattuso bemoaned his side wasting scoring chances. Milan have stepped up, staying unbeaten against Roma, Lazio, Juve and Napoli but the Partenopei need to heed Gattuso’s words. They face Barcelona in less than a month, and have to take whatever chances they get.

Di Francesco favourite for Fiorentina | Football Italia

Eusebio Di Francesco is reportedly in talks to take over as the coach of Fiorentina next season, having turned down Alaves.

According to Sportitalia, the former Sassuolo, Roma and Sampdoria boss has chosen the Viola as his favoured next destination.

The feeling is believed to be mutual, with Di Francesco emerging as the front-runner, especially as ex-Roma midfielder Daniele De Rossi does not have the necessary credentials to take a Serie A coaching role.

Spanish side Alaves had approached Di Francesco with a two-year contract, but he was not convinced.

Vincenzo Montella started the season with Fiorentina, but was fired and replaced by Beppe Iachini.
