Tonali: ‘I had to go to Milan’ | Football Italia

Sandro Tonali admits he ‘closed all the other doors, as I had to go to Milan’ and follow the footsteps of idols Gennaro Gattuso, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Paolo

The 20-year-old had been on the verge of joining their arch-rivals Inter, but as soon as the Rossoneri stepped forward to match the offer, he jumped at the chance.

“More or less everyone supports Milan where I’m from, including my father, who passed that passion on to me as a kid,” revealed Tonali in his press conference.

“I’ve wanted to wear this jersey for a while. I don’t speak much to (Brescia President Massimo) Cellino, but he realised straight away what it meant to me. He said he’d let me make my choice and he kept his word.

“I asked him to make this effort for me and he was super about it. When I realised there was this opportunity to join Milan, I closed all the other doors. I had to go to Milan. I had to.

“My agent did most of the negotiating with Inter, so he quite rightly left me out of it so I wouldn’t get distracted. As soon as I heard about Milan, and he knew that I supported them, we talked and I let him get to work.”

Tonali even called Napoli coach Rino Gattuso to ask for his blessing to wear the Number 8 jersey.

“Gattuso was my idol, and still is. The Number 8 was free, so I chose it, as it has various meanings in my life. Just working with Maldini was a pretty shocking thing to begin with too.

“I was at San Siro for Milan-Chievo, with Clarence Seedorf’s goal into the top corner in the final minutes. It was a pretty bad game, but that’s the one I wished I’d been playing, because I was there.”

Tonali could make his competitive debut on Thursday in the Europa League preliminary round tie with Shamrock Rovers.

“We can’t wait, we want to just go out there and play. It’s a very high level of quality in this squad and all the teammates – starting with Zlatan Ibrahimovic – pass on that desire to win. We want to prove on the pitch what we can do.

“Ibra is another idol, someone I already admired the first time he played for Milan. He manages to just put the team on his shoulders and carry them to victory. He’s a man to be taken as an example.”

Report: Tottenham rebuffed for Belotti | Football Italia

Tottenham Hotspur reportedly offered to take Andrea Belotti on loan with option to buy for total of €50m, but Torino rejected it.

According to Sky Sport Italia transfer expert Gianluca Di Marzio, the bid was turned down because the Granata will only let their hitman go for a permanent move.

If it was a loan with obligation to buy, then it may well be considered.

  The 26-year-old Italy international has

a release clause in his contract worth €100m that is only valid for clubs outside of Italy and a deal that runs to June 2022.

Il Gallo has played 192 competitive games for Toro, scoring 92 goals and providing 19 assists.

He also has nine goals in 28 senior Italy caps and is challenging European Golden Shoe winner Ciro Immobile for the starting spot at Euro 2020.

Tottenham are seeking a striker and keep looking to Serie A, having also approached Napoli for Arkadiusz Milik.

Drinkwater reunion with Ranieri at Samp? | Football Italia

Troubled Chelsea midfielder Danny Drinkwater could reunite with his old Leicester City coach Claudio Ranieri at Sampdoria.

According to Il Secolo XIX newspaper, an intermediary contacted Samp to propose Drinkwater as a transfer option.

The 30-year-old shot to fame with Ranieri’s fairy-tale Leicester side, moving to Chelsea for €38m in 2017.

He has since been loaned to Burnley and Aston Villa, but his career has been railroaded by off the field problems, including a drink-driving charge, a nightclub brawl and head-butting then-Villa teammate Jota.

“I’ve got loads more to give. I’m open to going abroad, even though it will be difficult with my son,” Drinkwater told The Telegraph newspaper.

“I need an anchor and I need to sort out one side of my life, so if I can sort my football out, even if it is abroad, then that will help in the long term.

“It probably all comes down to patience and trust with me. I need to change for it to work, otherwise I’ll be stuck

in this vicious circle.

“If I can trust people who are good at their job and be patient then I can only see me building my career back up now. I can’t see me staying in this situation. No chance.”

Sampdoria are starting their first full season under Ranieri, who took over from sacked Eusebio Di Francesco seven games into last term.

He managed to steer them out of the relegation zone and into mid-table safety.

Brahim: ‘Milan must aspire to win the Scudetto’ | Football Italia

New attacking midfielder Brahim Diaz has claimed Milan ‘must aspire to win the Scudetto’ and vowed to ‘do his best to achieve great things’.

Diaz moved from Real Madrid on loan and wants to help the Rossoneri to immediate success in Serie A 2020-21.

“Milan must also aspire to win the Scudetto, not only a place in the Champions League” he told at a press conference.

“The purchase of [Sandro] Tonali and the confirmation of [Zlatan] Ibrahimovic are excellent signs. We can do great things.

“This is a club with an immense history and finished the last season very well. It’s a pleasure to play here and special to train at Milanello. There’s great service and the facilities to do big things.

“The most important thing is to train and try all the tactics to put them in practice. The welcome was wonderful. It’s a club with 100-years of history and I hope to do great things here.”

If Diaz becomes a success at San Siro, Milan will have to enter new discussions with Real Madrid next summer, but the young forward wants to focus on 2020-21 for now.

  “I will not talk

about this, this year I will only think about Milan and I’m focused on the results,” he added.

“I had many offers, but Milan are a historic team with people who are working their best to reach the position he deserves.”

He highlighted that Paolo Maldini helped persuade him and revealed he found a ‘great atmosphere’ in the dressing room at Milan.

“Maldini was certainly an incentive, it’s a pleasure to play here. He is a legend in the world of football.

“Many legends come to mind, because this is such a big club that everyone remembers the players who played here.

“There’s a beautiful spirit, a beautiful environment. There’s a really good atmosphere and I hope we can do great things.

“I’m ready, I feel good. Physically I’m fine. I’ll give it my all and do my best for this great club, I want to do great things.”

Milik yet to accept Roma, keeps Dzeko waiting | Football Italia

The reports are growing that Napoli and Roma have agreed terms for Arkadiusz Milik for €25m, but the striker is still holding out hope for Juventus, although the Bianconeri prefer Edin Dzeko.

Multiple sources in Italy this evening all had the same story, that Roma had finally agreed a deal with Napoli for Milik.

Sky Sport Italia provide further details, as the €25m is spread out to €3m for a loan, €15m obligation to buy at the end of the season and another €7m in very easy to achieve bonuses.

The 26-year-old player has been offered a five-year contract worth €4.5m per season.

However, Sky Sport Italia and others also make it clear Milik has not yet accepted.

The Poland international had his heart set on Juventus, which is why he initially refused to extend his Napoli contract.

All three clubs are now going to push Milik to accept,

because Roma cannot sell 34-year-old Dzeko until they have secured his signature, and Juventus coach Andrea Pirlo put Dzeko at the top of his wish-list.

Sportitalia maintain Milik is leaning towards agreeing the move to the Stadio Olimpico.

If the domino effect gets going, it’s still possible that Juve will sign Luis Suarez from Barcelona for a nominal fee, but not until later in the transfer window.

Pirlo and Italiano get coaching badges | Football Italia

  Juventus boss Andrea Pirlo,

Spezia coach Vincenzo Italiano, Paolo Montero and Marco Cassetti are among the figures who earned their coaching badges today.

In order to sit on a Serie A or B bench, you need to have passed your UEFA Pro course.

Pirlo and Italiano were given emergency extensions because they had already begun the course, completing it this afternoon at the Coverciano training centre.

The coaches all began the course in September 2019 and had to attend 240 hours of lessons, including on-line versions that were organised during the lockdown.

Every student then had to sit an exam on their thesis and present it in a verbal exam too.

Juventus boss Pirlo is the most famous student to get his badges today, but he was by no means the only one.

Italiano helped Spezia to their first ever promotion into Serie A and he passed too, along with Sambenedettese coach Montero, former players Marco Cassetti, Morgan De Sanctis and Under-17 women’s boss Nazzarena Grilli.

Tomorrow’s set of exams include ex-Genoa coach Thiago Motta, Under-15 Italy tactician Patrizia Panico, Cristian Chivu, Emiliano Bigica, Mohamed Kallon, Roberto Muzzi, Angelo Palombo and Luca Toni.
